5 Tips for Moving Heavy Furniture with Ease

Moving heavy furniture, such as appliances, sleeper sofa, exercise equipment, massive tables or large electronics, can be a pain in the neck. Literally. Whether you’re moving them across town or across the room, you’ll need to take extra caution to keep them in top condition. Because, unfortunately, these things aren’t going to move themselves. Continue reading below if you’d like to learn how to move heavy furniture with ease.

Follow these tips for moving heavy furniture, to prepare for your relocation in the safest way possible.

5 Tips for Moving Heavy Furniture with Ease

1. Washer and Dryer

Prepare your washer and dryer first by cleaning out any detergent residue. Run the cycle on hot water, add ¾ cup vinegar and let it run the full cycle. Once the cycle has finished, wipe away the grime with a damp cloth then leave the door open for a few days to air out. Shut off the water supply and refer to the appliance’s manual for further manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Exercise Equipment

Whenever possible disassemble exercise equipment in preparation for a move. This will not only make it easier to move, but also take up less space in storage. Secure all bearings, attachments and weights to the machine so you don’t misplace anything.

3. Couches

Give yourself a few more inches to work around during your move by removing the feet on the bottom of couches (same goes for dresser drawer knobs). For sleeper sofas, tie down the bed portion with a long, strong strapping to ensure the sleeper sofa is secure in place during transport.

4. Electronics

If you have referred to the original owner’s manual, you may find they suggested to keep the original box for this very day. But, if you’re like most of us, that box is long gone. The best you can do now is protect it properly for a safe move. Disconnect any extra pieces including wires, batteries, ink cartridges, etc. Keep small items organized together in a bag that is clearly labeled, yet packed separately from the large unit to avoid damage.

5. Tables

Moving heavy tables can be tricky. Moving a glass-top table is very different than moving a pool table, yet, they both require special consideration. Glass-top tables, for example should have the top removed from the base before the move and wrapped in enough moving blankets to provide adequate protection. A pool table must be disassembled with reassembly in mind. In most cases, professional help is advised, but if you opt to try it yourself, be sure to be specific with labeling all parts. Most other tables can be disassembled ahead of time simply by removing the table legs from the top.
