Moving into a new home is an exciting proposition but one thing that can ruin it is if your moving experts lose or damage your items while in transit. Moving into your new home only to find that your cherished flat screen is cracked or that you are missing a whole box of cherished possessions can really take the joy out of moving. While quite rare, it is not completely unheard of, and if this ever happens to you, here are the steps you should take to be able to successfully file an insurance claim.
1. Inspect Your Bill of Lading
Right after the move, be sure to inspect your bill of lading carefully. The bill of lading is the document listing down in detail the items that were moved and what condition they were in. Check to see if there are any items that are missing or damaged and document any concerns immediately after you notice them.
2. File a Written Complaint Immediately
File your moving insurance claim with your home movers as soon as possible. The earlier you begin this process, the better your chances are for filing a successful claim. Make a detailed list of the lost or damaged items and provide photos if possible. Be sure to also report any damage done to your home during the move such as scratched floors or dinged walls.
3. Wait for the Settlement Offer
Once all the paperwork has been submitted the claims process should begin. Expect a claims adjuster to get in touch with you to investigate your complaint and make an offer. If you are happy with the offer, accept it. If not, let your mover know. If you are not able to come to an agreement, you can file a civil suit to recoup your losses. However, be forewarned that this process can be long and tedious so try your best to work something out.
