Moving and Storage NJ: 5 Tips for a Stress-Free Move

Scrambling around everywhere, trying to haul all your belongings out the door to the truck, hoping you didn’t forget anything important…

Sometimes when you’re moving, it seems that what you’re really carrying around is a ton of stress. But there are some ways that you can ensure that you pack and move free of stress and anxiety.

You can find more tips here, but if you want to avoid stressing out on your big move, here are five measures you can take:

#1: Plan Ahead

Moving is a lot of work, so you’d best start preparing for the move as soon as you can. By the fourth week before you’re moving, for instance, you should have started cleaning the rooms and disposing of items you don’t wish to take along.

The last thing you want is to remember at the last minute something you needed to do, only it’s too late now to do anything about it.

#2: Stay Organized

You’ve done a great job at packing everything up and are ready to clean up the house when you suddenly remember something: the vacuum already got packed in the truck! It’s not such a funny story when it actually happens to you, so it pays to stay organized throughout the move.

Thoroughly go through all your items, categorize them, divvy them up into boxes accordingly, and be sure to label all the containers. If it turns out you need any of those items, you’ll know where to look.

#3: Determine the Essentials

Even if you keep your stuff organized and labeled, it’s going to take some time to get it all unloaded at your new home. That’s why it’s important to keep your essentials – toiletries, cleaning supplies, extra sets of clothes, etc. – close to you.

These items should be placed in their own separate container and be kept in a place where you can quickly access them upon arriving at your new home.

In the case that you have children or pets, you should also account for things that they’ll need (diapers, toys, baby/pet food, etc.) and collect those items for your essentials box as well.

#4: Notify People (Call Them Before They Call You)

Believe it or not, utility companies, insurance agencies, and post offices among other groups are not psychic, so if you’re planning to move, you’d better let them know so they can make arrangements with you.

Otherwise, you could end up with a bunch of extra bills for your old home since you never got things like your utilities and homeowner’s insurance canceled. Plus, not getting things such as postal service transferred to your new home could leave you without those amenities.

Make sure you don’t wait until the last minute – you should start contacting people at least a couple weeks ahead.

#5: Pick a Good Mover

Finally, after everything else is taken care of and you’re prepared to move, be sure to have someone who can do a good job at it, or else all your hard work could end up being for nothing.
